Water Deeply and Less Often
Why watering depth beats frequency, how containers differ, and what to check before you water.
Shallow daily watering keeps roots near the surface, exactly where soil dries first. Watering less often but more deeply encourages roots downwards into soil that holds moisture longer.
Check before you water
Push a finger several centimetres into the soil. Dry at that depth means water; damp means wait. This single habit outperforms any fixed schedule across changing weather.
Containers are the exception
Limited soil volume dries quickly, especially in terracotta and in wind. Container plants often need daily checking in summer regardless of what a schedule suggests.
Mulch reduces the requirement
A five to eight centimetre mulch layer slows evaporation substantially, keeping beds usable through dry spells. Keep it pulled back from stems, and follow any local water restrictions in force.
